Adoption Checklist

When Adopting a cat, you should go through the following checklist before making this huge decision. Adopting a cat is not a 3-week thing. With it comes a catlife long responsibility. So please go through this carefully:

Checklist for Adopting Cats

Do I have enough time for a pet?

Cats are, according to prejudices, the suitable companions, if you want to have a simple pet, for which you do not have to spend much time and work. However, this is not so! A cat does not need less time and attention than a dog. In my opinion cats should not be alone for more than 5-6 hours a day. If you don’t want to take in adult cats, but rather kittens, be aware that they need much more time. You should do quite a bit of training and this can be very nerve-wracking and time-consuming, especially for beginners.

Do I have the money for a cat?

Besides food, toilet litter and the cost of various cat items like scratching posts and litter boxes, you should always have the “vet” factor in mind. Annual health checks are necessary, moreover, a cat can become chronically ill, where any amount of follow-up costs can arise. Money should not play a role in living together with living creatures.

Do I have the space for a cat?

Two cats should have at least 60 square meters available and get a living space suitable for cats. Important: There should be an enclosed balcony, patio or at least one secured window available for your new roommates.

You will be responsible for their health

You should schedule annual health checks (especially of the teeth) at the vet.
These should be as routine as they are for us humans. Also keep an eye on general changes and the coat and claw care of your cat. You may have to help here (e.g. with longhaired cats).
You can also learn a lot about the health of your cats by cleaning their litter boxes every day. If the feces or urine is altered or stays out, these can be the first signs of trouble.

Buy the right equipment for your cats

Your roommates will need some equipment before they move in. You should buy the following initial equipment in advance:

  • Cat toilets
  • Cat litter
  • Food bowls
  • Water bowls
  • Cat food
  • Transport box
  • Scratching trees
  • Toys
